Solar Power

Earlier in 2010, CHMA partnered on a project with an organization known as Community Housing Solutions (CHS).  Their goal is to assist low-income families acquire and maintain affordable housing.

CHS through federal funding proposed to, at no cost to CMHA or its residents, weatherize and insulate selected housing units.  The main focus of this project is to insulate walls, close off air gaps, check for proper operation the hot water heaters, furnaces, and to improve attic insulation.

In the attics of units where additional insulation was added, to help dissipate heat, it was necessary to increase the attic’s venting or air flow. One way to increase air-flow is to install roof vent fans.

Because of our commitment to conserve and reduce energy consumption, we decided to pilot the use of solar powered roof vent fans.  We have installed these at our Addison Townhouse complex, which is located  at  E. 71st & Wade Park.  These vents will make the upper floors cooler by driving warm air out of the roof.

Below are pictures of the installed fans and a link to obtain the manufacturer specifications for the fans. (Shine, sun, shine!)
